Different Strokes
Four north Queensland artists have combined their quite different talents – acrylic painting, photography and lapidary – for an exhibition influenced not only by the Atherton Tablelands but the wider world. The exhibition will run from 5 to 29 September at the Old Post Office Gallery, Atherton (every day 11am to 4pm) and coincides with the widely acclaimed Taste of the Tablelands celebration on Sunday 9 September.
The display will be opened by Councillor Shaaron Linwood, Tablelands Regional Council, at 6pm on 8 September 2012.
Entry is by donation with proceeds going to the Friends of the Hou Wang Temple to assist with much needed maintenance of the only intact 19th century timber and iron Chinese temple in Australia and New Zealand.
BIOS
Owen Pointon
Owen is a self-taught artist. He has been painting for 15 years and particularly enjoys capturing on canvas the wildlife of the Atherton Tablelands. His paintings now hang in homes across the country. Owen is currently Artist-in–Residence at the Old Post Office Gallery, Atherton
Gordon Grimwade
Gordon is an archaeologist, geographer, writer and an inveterate traveller strongly attached to his camera. Previous exhibitions have included ‘Along the Silk Road’ and ‘Guangdong Crafts’. His interest in new ways of presenting factual landscapes has led to his joint venture with accomplished calligrapher Ralph Knight.
Ralph Knight
Ralph’s training as a Chinese language specialist in the Australian Army kindled his interest in Chinese culture. In 2003 he studied Chinese calligraphy under Lin Min En in Kowloon with whom he held a joint exhibition in Beijing in 2006. Ralph subsequently founded Red Dragon Calligraphy and has run numerous workshops in north Queensland.
Ken Kitson
Ken is a self-confessed ‘rockhound’ who, with his wife Alma, has visited many Australian fossicking areas. His interest in lapidary has developed over some fifteen years during which time he has developed expertise in rock cutting, polishing and silver-smithing.
